Strategies for Fall Prevention
Practical, evidence-informed methods to reduce falls and injuries in Adult Foster Care. Master risk assessment, environmental safety, gait and balance support, medication review, post-fall response, and compliant documentation to keep residents safe and your home survey-ready.
Learn to use practical screening tools and observation to identify intrinsic and extrinsic risks: history of falls, orthostatic hypotension, vision/hearing, footwear, clutter, lighting, and bathroom hazards.
Safer Environments
Conduct room-by-room safety checks, improve lighting and contrast, set up bathrooms for safer toileting and showers, and maintain floors, thresholds, and handrails to reduce tripping and slipping.
Mobility & Transfers
Support gait and balance with correct use of canes, walkers, and wheelchairs; apply transfer techniques, non-slip strategies, and cueing that match each resident’s plan of care.
Medication Review
Spot high-risk medications (e.g., sedatives, antihypertensives, antipsychotics), understand side effects, and coordinate with prescribers to mitigate fall risk safely.
Post-Fall Response
Follow a calm, stepwise protocol: scene safety, rapid condition check, provider notification, observation timeline, documentation, root-cause analysis, and prevention plan updates.
Documentation & Compliance
Create defensible notes and incident reports that align with Michigan AFC expectations and payer requirements, including timelines, interventions, and follow-ups.
